Wolfville Eco-Fair
The Town of Wolfville in partnership with the Centre for Rural Sustainability and Acadia University proudly presented the Wolfville Eco-Fair. The event, held on October 27, 2007, was a special event offered as part of the education component of the Wolfville Sustainability Initiative. The Wolfville Eco-Fair featureed a Sustainability Showcase with exhibits, a live presentation of Al Gore's An Inconvenient Truth by Carl Duivenvoorden, workshops, speakers, an Ecouture Fashion Show, an Eco-Kid's Activity Centre and much more.
The Eco-Kings Action Team proudly sponsored the keynote presentation of Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth by Carl Duivenvoorden. Carl, of Fredericton, New Brunswick, is one of only two Atlantic Canadians chosen to train with Al Gore and his team of scientists in Nashville, Tennessee to spread the message about global warming. He presented Al Gore’s original show, adding updated information and a Nova Scotia perspective. 85 people attended the presentation.
Eco-Kings Community Challenge
The Eco-Kings Community Challenge was one of three Community Challenges in Nova Scotia (the other two being Halifax and Cape Breton). The Kings CED Agency was the hosting organization for the Kings County Community Challenge, whose goal was to engage 20% of Kings County households (approximately 4,500 households) by pledging to participate in the One-Tonne Challenge, by undertaking an EnerGuide for Houses home audit and by taking part in a home recycling or energy conservation program through the schools in Kings County.
Five program components were developed to reach the project objectives: Solid Waste Target Practice, Energy Sleuths, Bright Idea Campaign, Anti-Idling Campaign and Transportation Transformation.
The following is a list of the impressive project and program results that were compiled throughout the duration of the project:
- 3,641 Kings County residents directly engaged in Community Challenge programs;
- 720 local pledges were received to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by one tonne each;
- 11,330 One-Tonne Challenge materials were disseminated;
- 4,092 hits to our local Community Challenge website;
- 343 EnerGuide for Houses home audits were undertaken in Kings County;
- 4 new project partners were added;
- Over 80 media reports were generated;
- 60 public inquires were generated;
- 51 prize packages were given out to recognize community participation;
- 1,201 compact fluorescent light bulbs were distributed;
- 212 tonnes of waste was diverted from landfills through recycling and composting; and
- 570-773 tonnes of measurable greenhouse gas emissions were reduced.

From this data, an estimated 2,250 households participated in the Challenge, which was half of the project goal of 4,500 households.
